Wazirabad’s Signature Bridge project is still under construction and seems to missed its deadline again which is April 2017. Now the bridge is expected to be operational by August 2017, Shashi Bansal, the chief engineer of the Delhi Tourism and Transport Development Corporation Said, that the project, conceptualised in 2004, was halted several times due to several reasons like construction delayed cash crunch due to demonetization etc. Due to cash crunch, 50 per cent of the labour force has been moved out of Delhi in November and December 2016. Mostly laborer depend on cash payments and we were facing difficulty to pay cash daily or weekly wages. The situation is creeping towards normalcy from this month, the official said. Initially the estimate of Signature bridge was Rs 459 crore but when The tender was invited the lowest quoted amount based on the approved concept design was Rs 845 crore. While A preliminary estimate taking the quoted rate of the tender was reframed for Rs 993 crore and submitted to the PWD. Later, Rs 887.29 crore was accorded in 2008. A senior PWD official said, "The Signature Bridge was to be completed by 2008. It has already been delayed by seven years and almost 25 percent of the work remains to be done. The project was delayed due to forest clearance, financial issues with the contractors, and the material which was being sourced from the Chinese firm was the bigger issue. "The cost of the project went up due to the drilling on rocky surface beneath the river so the engineers had to procure special Korean-made boring machines. The Signature bridge has unique design with The bow-shaped tower, cable-supported steel bridge - modelled on the London Bridge - is being built as a tourist spot by the Gammon India Ltd and two other firms from Italy and Brazil.
